"Wearing my Full Devil Jacket again/Keeps me safe in sin" - "Full Devil Jacket" God and the Devil, Sin and Salvation, Temptation and Virtue. The banks of the Mississippi are awash with tales of good and evil, of men and women making the choices that send them down the paths of darkness or light. The great Delta bluesmen sang with heart-rending sorrow of these things. Decades later, that tradition lives on in the monstrously heavy sound of full devi1 jacket. The full devi1 jacket sound brings forth images of the region, as a swampy undercurrent permeates their edgy vocals and music. "A lot of people think there's a psychedelic, voodoo vibe in what we do," says guitarist Jonathan Montoya. "Not bluesy particularly, more like a bastard child born at night on some dark stretch of 2-lane Tennessee highway, the result of some deal between good & evil." Indeed, "heavy metal" and "aggro rock" don't begin to do justice to the dark-hued, often unearthly vortex of sound that these five musicians from Jackson, Tennessee create. A jackhammer rhythm section and torrents of thick guitar riffs establish a formidable backdrop for the vocals of Tennessee-born singer Josh Brown, whose wrath-fueled voice is capable of Summoning, both heaven and hell as he searches lyrically for the answers to questions that no one alive may be able to answer. Brown's lyrics deal with spiritual issues - he is unafraid to face his demons, question sin and temptation, and deal with the darker, seedier side of life. Wherever Brown gets his inspiration, his emotionally wrenching vocals perfectly complement the twisting musical fury of his bandmates, who create a relentless assault of pounding, hard-edged grooves that instantly place them at the forefront of the new school of heavy rock. Full Devil Jacket came to life in 1995 when Foster and Reaves needed a bass player for a project they were planning. When Bebout showed up with Josh Brown, everyone quickly realized something special was happening, and writing and rehearsing began immediately. When Montoya completed the lineup (he was living with Bebout at the time and knew they were looking for a second guitarist),full devil jacket was born. Local shows in front of fanatical audiences led to both their initial demo recordings and management deals, while a "local artist" slot at the WXTB Livestock festival in Tampa caught the attention of Island Def Jam A&R exec Tom Zutaut. An appearance on the "Emerging Artists" stage at Woodstock '99 gave the band their first high-profile gig, outside the South. At both Livestock and Woodstock, crowds leaving the main stage area were stopped dead in their tracks, drawn by the band's hypnotic, pulverizing opening chords, and both sets finished in front of packed, chaotic, completely converted audiences. Similar experiences have occurred on this past summer's Warped Tour, with radio airplay following the band's cross-country swath in cities like New York, L.A., San Diego, Toronto, Orlando, Charlotte, and Memphis. Now, on October 5th, the world at large will get its first taste of full devil jacket with a five-song EP entitled A Wax Box To Put Your Frankenstein Heads In. Featuring such searingly brutal hymns as "Screaming Jesus" and "Dead Mother Fucker," plus the haunting, dirge-like "Full Devil Jacket" itself, the EP is just a brief preview of revelations to come on the band's first full-length album, due in January. In addition to the band's solo releases, full devil jacket's music can be found elsewhere: the band was handpicked by Megadeth to add a track for their Extra Value CD (which goes with the first 100,000 of the new Megadeth releases sold), and will also have a track on the upcoming Heavy Metal 11 soundtrack. The band's website, www.fulldevi1jacket.com, has been attracting numerous fans from around the world with it's original contests (e.g. the best Woodstock story wins $1,000) and free music (one can win the band's CD online). The word of mouth on the band is growing through the site, as more and more curious hard rock fans log on to catch the buzz of the band. About his band's eerie moniker, Montoya says, "Josh wrote a song called 'Full Devil Jacket,' about questioning your spirituality and where you're at. But everybody in the band has their particular take on the name and what it means." One meaning is clear: full devi1jacket defines heaviness like nothing that's come before. Prepare yourself...
